AGM 2017

The focus of the IPE is the support and education of its members. The National Directors hold monthly conference calls to discuss topic of importance to the profession. Topics discussed can relate to specific jurisdictions, regulatory concerns, membership issues, etc. This month’s highlights of the discussion are:
  1. AGM a success
  2. New National Positions
  3. National Website update
This year’s Annual General was a success in spite of the lack of supporting activities by a Branch or Area. A lot of progress has been made in updating operation memos that deal with the structure of the organization. There were over 30 members present at the AGM and several more participated via conference call. There were 100 proxies received which is the most ever. There were some comments written on the proxies regarding the look of them which made filling them out easier. Much of the work done this year has been on making the structure of the organization easier to work with. The Directors have reviewed many of the Operation Memos that concern the structure of the IPE and updated them to reflect modern business practices. The key Operation Memos that concern the finances will be looked at next year.

The Directors recognized that the quantity of work has increased at the Director level and there needs to be a means of succession planning. To this end there has been the addition of the position of Alternate Area Direction. This member would be equally involved and informed of the issues of their respective Area. The only difference between the Area Director and the Alternate is that only the Area Director can vote. If an Area Director is unable to attend a meeting, they can provide their Alternate with a proxy and maintain a voice at the table. There is also a new position as Media Relations Officer.

The IPE must move forwards with adopting the use of technology for communicating with our members and those we wish to inform and engage outside our organization. In recognition of this, the Directors have approved the use of Facebook Groups and Instagram at the Area level. These communication platforms are a major part of today’s young adult communication and social entertainment/information mix. By embracing these platforms of communication, younger Power Engineers may take a second look at being part of the IPE. The driving force behind each of these communication platforms will be a Media Relations Officer. Their job will be to act as the moderator ensuring that the content posted is professional, follows the code of ethics for the IPE and respects the privacy of others.

Both of these new positions are better described in the job poster attached to this newsletter. All of the positions are voluntary and offer the opportunity to develop new skills that are recognized in industry. Good, consistent communication is key to the IPE remaining relevant in today’s fast paced world. The backbone for the communication should be through the National website. The current website is in need of an update. The National Directors recognize this and are looking at alternative website platforms that will look and act professional as well as offer full CMS and security. This will be a very large step forwards for the IPE.

The National Directors are looking at ways to encourage and/or allow for a wider participation by members in this important event. We encourage your input as this is an organization that works for all Power Engineers.
